Statement on Minimum Wage and Consequential Adjustment Agreement with Lagos State Government

Dear Comrades,

After several weeks of intense negotiation meetings between the Labour side and the Lagos State Government, we are pleased to announce that an agreement has been reached today on the new minimum wage implementation for Lagos State public service employees. Effective from 29th July, 2024, with the implementation to commence in November, 2024, the minimum wage for the least paid workers in the Lagos State public service has been set at ₦85,000. The agreement also includes the consequential adjustment across various grade levels, which reflects the unique economic pressures faced by Lagos State Public workers.

Below is an outline of the percentage increases for consequential adjustments, taking into account the cost of living in Lagos State, as juxtaposed with Federal adjustments:

Understanding the challenging economic conditions workers are enduring, we further advocated for concessions to alleviate these hardships. Among these, we requested the following to support the livelihood of Lagos State public workers:

1. *Payment of a 13th-Month Salary* in December of every year, equivalent to 100% of Basic salary to further ease financial strain.
2. *Increase of the Minimum Wage Benchmark to ₦100,000 by January 2025* in alignment with economic realities.
3. *Payment of 40% Peculiar Allowance* for core civil service employees.
4. *Payment of Arrears for August, September, and October 2024*
5. *Enhanced Health Insurance Plan* to premium package for improved access to quality healthcare.
6. *Continuation of Differential Workdays and Palliative payment* to support those exempted from this arrangement.
In addition, we proposed the development of affordable mass high rise housing for Lagos State workers to rent within reasonable distance of their places of assignment during their period of service , which would contribute to a supportive living environment and increase productivity.

The Lagos State Public Service Joint Negotiating Council appreciates the solidarity and support of all members throughout this process including the leadership of our labour centres - Nigeria Labour Congress(NLC) and Trade Union Congress(TUC).We remain committed to championing progress in worker welfare, improving conditions of work, and advocating for the ongoing betterment of every public service employee in Lagos State.
