Chief Dr. Hon. Billy Famous Osawaru made case for the establishment of a railway stations in strategic locations within Benin City

Hon. Chief (Dr) Billy Osawaru's question at the ongoing Committee meeting on Public Assets is a valid one, as Benin City, the capital of Edo State, is surprisingly lacking in railway stations, despite being a significant hub. The city's rich history and cultural heritage, including its role as the center of the Bini Kingdom, make it an important location that deserves better connectivity

Honorable Chairman,  distinguished members and invited guests, i am Hon. Chief (Dr) Billy Famous Adesuwa Osawaru, member representing Orhionmwon and Uhunmwode Federal Constituency, and the Obazuhunwa of Benin Kingdom and i am a proud Benin Chief and a member of the Committee on Public Assets, I rise to move a motion that will bring to the fore a critical infrastructure gap in our great city, Benin.

Mr. Chairman, I wish to bring to the attention of this committee the glaring omission of Benin City, the capital of Edo State, from the Nigerian Railway Corporation's (NRC) network. Despite being a significant hub and a notable kingdom in Nigeria, Benin City lacks a functional railway station.

I hereby invite the Managing Director of the Nigerian Railway Corporation to take a proactive march forward and include Benin City as a key railway hub in Nigeria. The city's rich history, cultural heritage, and economic importance make it an ideal location for a railway station.

Furthermore, I propose that the NRC consider establishing railway stations in strategic locations within Benin City, such as Urhonigbe and other relevant areas. This will not only enhance connectivity but also boost economic growth and development in the region.

I urge the Managing Director of the NRC to take immediate action to address this infrastructure gap and ensure that Benin City is integrated into the national railway network.

I move that this committee recommends to the NRC to take the necessary steps to establish a functional railway station in Benin City, and to report back to this committee within a reasonable timeframe.
