Edo State House of Assembly confirmed Hon. Dr. Washington Osifo and others as Commissioners, seven Nominees for Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC)

At resumption of plenary today, Wednesday 15th January, 2024, the Edo State House of Assembly confirmed six commissioners and seven nominees for the Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC).

Recall that Governor Monday Okpekholo submitted six commissioner nominees to the state assembly for screening and confirmation on January 8th. Their confirmation followed the recommendations of the House Committee on Rules, Business, and Government House, chaired by the Majority Leader, Hon. Charity Aiguobarueghian.

The confirmed commissioners are:

- Hon. Paul Ohonbamu.

- Hon. Washington Osifo.

- Dr. Paddy Iyamu.

- Mr. Andrew Igegbai.

- Mrs. Olabisi Idahomen.

- Bar. Lucky Eseigbe.

Hon. Charity Aiguobarueghian, the chairman of the committee, presented the committee's report on the screening to the House. He stated that the nominees possess the necessary educational qualifications and years of experience in both public and private sectors to be appointed as commissioners in the state.

The House adopted the committee's recommendation through a motion moved by the Majority Leader and seconded by the Minority Leader, Hon. Eric Okaka.

In addition, the House confirmed Jonathan Aifuobhokhan as the EDSIEC chairman, along with Anthony Aigbokhomhan, Suleiman Ikhuoria, Umoru Frank, Imafidon Osarodion, Hon. Ojo Asein, and Ighomo Egharevba as members.

The House also passed into law a bill for a law to repeal the Edo State Secret Cult Prohibition Law 2018 and to establish the Secret Cult and similar activities (Prohibition Law 2024).

 Furthermore, a bill for a law to provide for the extension of the retirement age of magistrates and presidents of the Area customary court in Edo State 2025 was passed after a favorable deliberation by the lawmakers.

The House plenary was subsequently adjourned to Thursday, January 16, 2025, following an adjournment motion moved by Hon. Osamwonyi Atu and seconded by Hon. Kingsley Ugabi.
