NLC and NUT leadership visit Edo SUBEB Chairman to address the teachers essential needs

.......the thirteen months salary for Edo State primary school teachers should not be left out having paid all other workers in the state. 

The Nigeria labour Congress NLC Edo State Chairman Com. Bernard Joman Egweghide and the Chairman Nigeria Union of Teachers NUT Edo State Wing Com. Bernard Gbenga Ajobiewe on Tuesday 7, 2025 paid a courtesy visit to the chairman Edo State Universal Basic Education Board, Dr. Paddy Iyamu to address the essential needs and expectations of both the NLC and NUT in Education sector reform in Edo State.

The NLC chairman, stated " in 2016 primary school teachers in Edo State were over thirteen ( 13000 ) teachers. But today, Edo State primary school teachers are less than six thousand ( 6000 ). The governor, his Excellency senator Monday Okpevbholo told us during his campaign that teachers will be employed on his first hundred days in office and we strongly believed him. We appeal to you sir to helps convey our message to him that there's urgent need for teachers employment "

Meanwhile, the Chairman NUT made a passionate appeals to the board chairman. On his words " the thirteen months salary for Edo State primary school teachers should not be left out having paid all other workers in the state. Please sir, Primary School teachers own should be paid".

He also stated that " leadership is by experience. Headteacher in a school is an order of seniority. using a junior officer of level 10 to head level 15 officer in a school is an aberration according to civil service rules. We once brought this observation to the previous administration but it was turned down. And that's why some teachers are not working as expected. We appeal to you sir, as the board chairman to reverse this decision and it should be urgent. Leadership in our schools should be oder of seniority".

He further stated " before Edobest program the closing time of our schools was 1:45pm and this has been done right from Universal Basic Education Commission UBEC because the pupils in primary schools should be able to accommodate up to 1:45pm. Going beyond this time, the children metal age will not be able to cope and once the time exceed the children will sleep off. We beg you to revisit this decision and reverse closing time to 1:45"

He also appealed to the board chairman to intervene in the building of NUT new Secretariat and provision of operational bus by the government. The union leaders appealed for the lifting of suspension of a primary school teacher and emphasized the importance of such actions for the moral of the educators.

Dr. Paddy Iyamu the SUBEB Chairman who received their request positively, commiting to investigate the situation and reach out to governor Monday Okpevbholo for further support. He said " the governor is hundred percent in support of teachers employment. He has already giving us a step and in coming days you are going to see some of the actions.  The 13th months was a kind gesture of the governor. It will get to every workers. On the school leadership, the board will made the appropriate correction in lacking areas. On NUT Secretariat I will investigate. Tell the teachers that, this new government is a new era and the government is ready to support every teachers in Edo. They should in turn ready to support every Edo child"
