The primary duty of government is to ensure the security and welfare of its people. Access to affordable public health care is one of the many measures used to gauge the impact a government has on the lives of its citizens. After all, what is welfare without the preservation, safeguarding, and promotion of the health of indigenes and residents?

Through meaningful initiatives and laudable programs, the Chairman of Uhunmwode Local Government Council, Hon. Austin Imafidon, has shown that the health of the people at the grassroots he governs is of utmost priority to him. Since the inception of his administration, Hon. Imafidon has made deliberate efforts at strengthening primary health centers, organized free medical outreaches, and intensified health awareness campaigns.

Recently, Hon. Imafidon launched a malaria awareness and prevention campaign to mark World Malaria Day. Malaria remains a major health challenge in Nigeria, accounting for approximately 24% of global cases and 30% of global malaria deaths. Despite a reported decline in national prevalence to about 15%, the disease still infects over 68 million Nigerians annually and costs the economy an estimated ₦1.6 trillion yearly. It is against this backdrop that Hon. Imafidon's strategic intervention can best be described as proactive. His emphasis is on prevention while also making provision for curative drugs in line with His Excellency, Gov. Monday Okpebholo's SHINE Agenda, which has Health as a cardinal pillar.

Additionally, Hon. Imafidon's administration is set to host a comprehensive free eye care programme in partnership with the T.Y. Danjuma Foundation, Care Vision Initiative, and the primary health development agency. This comprehensive eye programme will cover free consultation/diagnosis, treatment, surgeries, administration of corrective aids and drugs, is scheduled to hold very soon.

Having Non-governmental organizations partner with a local government administration reflects the dynamism of the Chief Executive. Hon. Imafidon has always said that government cannot do it all in closing the gap and meeting the yearnings of the people, hence his commitment to creating a conducive environment for private sector actors to partner with government in developmental initiatives and programs for the benefit of the people.

Uhunmwode, today, is shining!
