Tinubu Signs New NIMC Act 2026 into Law, Ushers in Major Overhaul of Nigeria's Digital Identity System
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has officially signed the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) Act 2026 into law, marking a significant milestone in Nigeria's drive to strengthen its national identity management framework and modernise the delivery of identification services.
The landmark legislation was signed into law on Friday at the State House, Abuja, in a move expected to enhance the efficiency, security and administration of the country's national identity ecosystem.
The new Act is designed to reinforce the operations of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), improve the management of citizens' identity records, and support seamless access to government and private sector services through a more robust and reliable identification system.
The development is also expected to accelerate Nigeria's digital transformation agenda by providing a stronger legal framework for identity management, data integration and the expansion of national identification services across the country.
