Woman Posing as Nurse Arrested After Stealing Newborn Baby From The Mother at Benue Healthcare Centre.
Police have arrested a woman accused of stealing a newborn baby from a healthcare centre in Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State.
The incident reportedly occurred in the early hours of Tuesday after the newborn and his mother were moved to a ward for further care following delivery.
According to activist Zege Orkwande, the suspected child trafficker was tracked to Adekaa in Gboko following intelligence from members of the public. He said the woman was traced from Tarka LGA on a motorcycle before she was arrested in Gboko.
Orkwande also disclosed that about nine other persons had been arrested and detained at the Benue State Police Command headquarters in Makurdi in connection with the case.
According to reports, the baby initially did not cry after birth, prompting a nurse on duty to intervene. The newborn later responded normally, after which he was moved with his mother to a ward.
While in the ward, a woman allegedly approached the mother, introduced herself as a nurse and claimed she needed to conduct another examination on the baby. She reportedly took the newborn and headed towards the labour room.
The baby’s grandmother, who became suspicious, followed the woman and waited outside the labour room. However, the woman allegedly asked her to step away, assuring her that everything was under control.
The suspect reportedly disappeared with the baby shortly afterwards.
The Benue State Police spokesperson, DSP Peter Aondongu, had earlier confirmed the incident, saying the case had been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Makurdi for further investigation.
The incident reportedly occurred at a Family Healthcare Centre in Gboko, while investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the baby’s disappearance and the alleged involvement of other suspects.
