JAMB Warns Universities Against Issuing Admission Letters, Says CAPS Approval Is Mandatory

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities and other tertiary institutions against issuing admission letters directly to candidates, insisting that the responsibility for official admission documentation rests with the Board.

JAMB Registrar, Prof. Segun Aina, gave the warning when he received a delegation from a private university in his office.

The Registrar emphasised that JAMB is the statutory body responsible for regulating and coordinating admissions into Nigerian universities, polytechnics and colleges of education, stressing the importance of complying with established admission procedures.

He expressed concern that many candidates mistakenly assume that admission letters issued directly by individual institutions automatically confirm the validity of their admissions. According to him, such practices could mislead applicants and create uncertainty about their admission status.

Prof. Aina therefore urged institutions engaging in the practice to desist and ensure that candidates obtain the appropriate official admission documentation through JAMB.

He further stressed that admissions must be properly processed and recognised through the Board's Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS), noting that compliance is essential for candidates who intend to participate in the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) mobilisation process.

The warning serves as a reminder to tertiary institutions and prospective students to adhere strictly to JAMB's admission procedures to avoid complications arising from unrecognised or improperly processed admissions.

Candidates are also advised to verify their admission status through the appropriate official channels before accepting admission offers or proceeding with registration.
