NUT Edo State wing visit Edo SUBEB Chairman. As non payment of 13th months salary to Edo State primary school teachers and review of closing time, top agenda

Nigeria Union of Teachers NUT Edo State Wing led by Com. Bernard Gbenga Ajobiewe on Wednesday 29th, 2025 paid a courtesy visit to the chairman Edo State Universal Basic Education Board, Mrs Goodness Onomen Brings to congratulate her on her appointment as SUBEB Chairman also to address the essential needs of teachers in Edo State. 

The NUT chairman, stated " in 2016 primary school teachers in Edo State were over thirteen ( 13000 ) teachers. But today, Edo State primary school teachers are less than six thousand ( 6000 ). We appeal to you ma, for urgent recruitment of qualified teachers. In doing this ma, Edostar teachers should be put into consideration"

The Chairman NUT made a passionate appeals to the board chairman. On his words " the thirteen months salary for Edo State primary school teachers should not be left out having paid all other workers in the state. Please ma, Primary School teachers own should be paid".

He also stated that " leadership is by experience. Headteacher in a school is an order of seniority. using a junior officer of level 10 to head level 15 officer in a school is an aberration according to civil service rules. We once brought this observation to the previous administration but it was turned down. And that's why some teachers are not working as expected. We appeal to you ma, as the board chairman to reverse this decision and it should be urgent. Leadership in our schools should be oder of seniority".

He further stated " before Edobest program the closing time of our schools was 1:45pm and this has been done right from Universal Basic Education Commission UBEC because the pupils in primary schools should be able to accommodate up to 1:45pm. Going beyond this time, the children metal age will not be able to cope and once the time exceed the children will sleep off. We beg you to revisit this decision and reverse closing time to 1:45" as most of the children comes to school without food.

The union appeals for early payment of Edo State primary school teachers salary. Teachers should get their salaries same time with other Edo State workers.

He also appealed to the board chairman for upward review of subvention to schools as a result of every day increase of items. The union leaders appealed for the lifting of suspension of a primary school teacher.

Mrs.Goodness Onomen Brings, the SUBEB Chairman who welcome the request of the union positively. She thanked the union for the visit, solicit for collaboration and promised to carry the union along. She said "all your request will be look into, discuss it with his Excellency senator Monday Okpevbholo the governor of Edo State." She urge the union leaders to reach out to their teachers  to always be at their duty post for every Edo child.
