HON. OSAWARU LEADS MEMBERS OF THE COMMITTEE ON COOPERATION AND INTEGRATION IN AFRICA ON STRATEGIC FAMILIARISATION VISIT TO NIGERIA’S PERMANENT REPRESENTATIVE TO ECOWAS.

Abuja, Nigeria – July 01, 2025.

As part of efforts to strengthen Nigeria’s strategic role in regional diplomacy and continental integration, the Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Cooperation and Integration in Africa, Hon. Chief Dr. Billy Famous Adesuwa Osawaru, on Tuesday led members of the Committee on a familiarisation visit to Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), Ambassador Musa Nuhu, at the ECOWAS Office in Abuja.

This high-level visit underscored the committee’s resolve to bridge the gap between legislative oversight and executive diplomacy, aligning national efforts with the ECOWAS mandate on peace, security, economic cooperation, and integration across West Africa.

In his keynote remarks, Hon. Osawaru highlighted the critical nature of Nigeria’s leadership within ECOWAS, reaffirming the legislature’s commitment to strengthening sub-regional institutions through policy formulation, support for ratification of ECOWAS protocols, and robust oversight of Nigeria’s engagement with African multilateral bodies.

He further noted that the visit was not only a statutory function but also a demonstration of the committee’s resolve to deepen collaboration with Nigeria’s diplomatic institutions in the sub-region.

Ambassador Musa Nuhu welcomed the delegation warmly and expressed deep appreciation for the visit, describing it as timely and strategic. He briefed the committee on Nigeria’s contributions to ECOWAS interventions in regional peacekeeping, trade harmonisation, and the pursuit of the ECOWAS Vision 2050. He also highlighted the need for legislative advocacy in pushing for full domestication of ECOWAS instruments and enhancing Nigeria’s role in regional policy direction.

The engagement concluded with a reaffirmation of mutual cooperation and the need for more frequent legislative-diplomatic dialogues that will reflect Nigeria’s continental ambitions and commitment to African unity.
