UHUNMWODE COUNCIL TO TRAIN FARMERS AS PART OF MEASURES TO TACKLE FOOD INSECURITY

In line with H.E Sen. Monday Okpebholo's commitment to advancing agricultural development and tackling food insecurity, the Chairman of Uhunmwode Local Government Area, Hon. Benjamin Osa's Iredia has entered into a strategic partnership to train selected farmers within the local government.

The training, which has commenced is themed “Agriculture and Food Security in Nigeria: The Role of Edo Farmers,” is designed to underscore the vital role of farmers in addressing food shortages, while also strengthening the capacity of local farmers to adopt modern agricultural practices that will guarantee improved yields, profitability, and sustainability.

Speaking at the program, Hon. Benjamin Osa's Iredia noted that agriculture remains a major contributor to the state’s economy, and Uhunmwode has a comparative advantage that must be maximized.. He stated,

“Farmers are the heartbeat of our local economy. At a time when Nigeria is grappling with food insecurity, it has become imperative to support our farmers with knowledge, resources, and practical skills that will enable them to rise above challenges and feed our growing population. This partnership is a bold step towards ensuring that Uhunmwode farmers are not left behind in the national drive for food sufficiency.”

The training will provide participants with insights on both traditional and modern approaches to farming, as well as practical strategies for navigating the challenges of climate change, access to credit, food preservation, and livestock management, Food Preservation, Poultry Production and Management.

The program will bring together seasoned agricultural experts, policymakers, and farmers to share knowledge, build networks, and create a roadmap for sustainable farming practices in Uhunmwode.

Hon. Iredia further assured that he will continue to prioritize agriculture as a means of job creation, poverty reduction, and economic empowerment. He reaffirmed that the council is working closely with relevant state agencies to provide farmers with improved seedlings, fertilizer support, extension services, and access to modern farming technologies.

“Food security is national security. When we feed our people, we reduce poverty, improve health, and strengthen our communities. This is why i am fully committed to ensuring that Uhunmwode becomes a leading food basket in Edo State,” the Chairman concluded.
