FG Approves ₦40.7bn Health Fund to Boost Primary Healthcare, Maternal and Child Services
The Federal Government has approved the disbursement of ₦40.7 billion under the Basic Health Care Provision Fund (BHCPF) to strengthen primary healthcare delivery, expand health insurance coverage and improve access to essential medical services across Nigeria.
The approval is part of renewed efforts by the Federal Government to improve the country's healthcare system, with particular attention to vulnerable populations, maternal and child health, and the delivery of affordable and accessible medical services.
The decision was reached at the 16th meeting of the BHCPF Ministerial Oversight Committee held in Abuja, where the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, and other key stakeholders reviewed strategies for improving the implementation of the fund.
The meeting focused on ensuring that healthcare resources are effectively deployed, aligned with national health priorities and translated into measurable improvements in the quality of healthcare available to Nigerians.
The approved funding is expected to support critical interventions, including the expansion and strengthening of primary healthcare facilities, improved service delivery, wider health insurance coverage for vulnerable populations, disease surveillance and access to emergency medical treatment.
These interventions are aimed at addressing some of the major challenges facing Nigeria's healthcare sector, particularly inadequate access to essential services among low-income households and people living in underserved communities.
The funding is also expected to contribute to improved maternal and child healthcare by strengthening primary healthcare services, which play a critical role in antenatal care, safe childbirth, immunisation and the early detection and treatment of illnesses.
The Basic Health Care Provision Fund is a key component of Nigeria's efforts to achieve universal health coverage. It provides a framework for financing essential health services through designated funding channels, including primary healthcare facilities, emergency medical services and health insurance programmes for vulnerable Nigerians.
Through the fund, the government seeks to reduce financial barriers to healthcare, improve the availability of essential medical services and ensure that more Nigerians can access quality treatment without facing excessive out-of-pocket expenses.
The latest approval underscores the Federal Government's commitment to strengthening the healthcare system and improving health outcomes nationwide.
However, the impact of the ₦40.7 billion allocation will depend largely on transparent disbursement, effective implementation, proper monitoring and accountability to ensure that the resources reach the intended beneficiaries.
For millions of Nigerians, particularly mothers, children and vulnerable households, effective implementation of the funding could represent an important step towards more accessible, affordable and reliable healthcare services.
